Florida scales back Food Stamp benefits
Several states, including Florida, are ending the emergency SNAP benefits even as food prices continue to sour.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture began offering the increased benefit in April 2020 in response to surging unemployment after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States.
Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Tennessee have also scaled back the benefits.
Republican leaders in these argue that the extra benefits were intended to only temporarily help people forced out of work by the pandemic.
The US Department of Health recently extended the COVID-19 emergency declaration by another 3 months through July 2022.
This means that states can choose to continue to issue extra SNAP benefits through July 2022.
